Not a “new” word today, but I chose this one to highlight a particular sound change in Gothic Romance where Latin 〈ct〉 causes some umlaut and palatalization: neocta ‘night’
Umlaut in Gothic Romance:
- a → e (/e/)
- â → ê (/eː/)
- e → ei (/i/)
- ê → î (/iː/)
- i, î → no change
- o → eo (/ɛʊ̯/)
- ô → eô (/eːʊ̯/)
- u → eu (/iʊ̯/; becomes /ɛʊ̯/ after a liquid)
- û → eû (/iːʊ̯/
